affirming therapy for neurodivergent individuals

Let’s welcome your neurodivergence in its complexity and fullness.

NEURODIVERGENCE EMPOWERMENT

I work with adults whose neurodivergence was overlooked or actively suppressed in childhood. You’re exploring whether you might benefit from learning more about your brain. You might have had experiences of trying to fit yourself into neurotypical standards, ultimately resulting in frustration, overwhelm, disappointment, and shame. Rather than trying to conform to something that isn’t you, you can learn to make room for who you are now and lovingly support your neurodivergence.

“Refusing to perform neurotypicality is a revolutionary act of disability justice. It's also a radical act of self-love.”

Is This You?

you keep hearing all of these messages about how to be an “adult” and feel judged for the things you’re struggling with, such as:

  • Emotion regulation

  • Task initiation

  • Time management

  • Sensory regulation

  • Organization

  • Long-term planning

  • Attention regulation

  • Decision-making

  • Maintaining relationships

  • Confidence and self-esteem

THERE’S SPACE FOR YOU HERE

You may have challenges in your relationships because your needs and inner experiences aren’t understood. You may have thought or felt things like:

  • “My parents think I’m lazy when I get distracted or procrastinate”

  • “People don’t like being around me because they think I’m rude”

  • “My friends think I’m talking at them when I share my interests”

  • “I feel like other people know how to socialize and I missed the memo”

  • “My partner is upset with me because I keep forgetting they say”

  • “I’m struggling with taking care of myself; I feel like I should be able to do it on my own and I don’t know how to ask for help”

These are all painfully common experiences for neurodivergent people. We can move away from shame and embrace the parts of you that need extra love and support. I’ll help you learn how to communicate and advocate for your needs so that you can have the fulfilling relationships you want.

AFFIRMING THERAPY FOR NEURODIVERGENCE INCLUDES…

01

Psychodynamic relational therapy: the therapy relationship becomes the place to practice being vulnerable with your emotions. It can be where you experiment with unmasking, at whatever pace feels good for you.

02

Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS can be useful in building loving relationships with the parts that are trying to manage and protect you. When we make room for these parts, they can learn to relax and have more options for how they want to be. This is essential for building internal trust and resilience.

03

Somatic therapy: Some neurodivergent people struggle with knowing what’s happening in their bodies, from their emotions to other regulation systems like hunger, thirst, and tiredness. Somatic work can support with slowly tuning in to the body so that you can catch those cues in real-time and make decisions accordingly.
